Forty-One

A few minutes later, they sat in the darkened room, watching as the flames danced and licked the logs. Courtney smiled and gave a happy sigh.

“What’s on your mind, Princess?”

“I was just realizing how content I feel right now. Full belly. Warm fire. Delicious wine. Even more delicious man.” She brushed her nose along his neck, inhaling the scent of his cologne.

Wes turned his head and gave her a kiss on the temple. “This is nice, isn’t it?”

“It feels like I’ve always known you, and yet, I don’t really know much about you.”

“Well, what do you want to know?” Wes took a sip of his drink.

“So many things really. I could use a run-down of the first forty-one years of your life, right up until the part when we met.”

“Oh, is that all?” he asked with a chuckle.

“Pretty much.”

“That would take days and I’ve got other plans for you this evening.” His meaning was clear.

“Mmm, well, in that case, I should think of two important questions to ask, but they both have to really cut to the chase.”

“Okay. I can answer two questions, but whatever you ask, you have to answer, as well.”

“Deal.” She paused, tapping her fingertips on the glass for a moment. “Oh! Got one. What’s the one accomplishment you’re most proud of?”

Wes let out a long breath. “Hmm. That’s a tricky one. I guess I’d have to say receiving the Medal of Valor. It’s the highest honor awarded to anyone in the military. You get to go to Washington and meet the president. He gives you the award and thanks you for your service. So, that was a pretty big deal.”

“Wow. Are you serious? That’s amazing.”

Wes nodded. “It was a good moment. My dad was there. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him look so proud.”

“I bet. How did you earn it?” Courtney asked.

“Oh, you know, just general hero-type stuff.” He shrugged, trying to look nonchalant.

Courtney gave him a broad smile. “General hero-type stuff? Can you be more specific?”

“All right. If you must know, I saved some guys in my unit from walking into a building that was wired to explode. That in itself is nothing special. It was the fact that I had already been shot when I did it that bumped it up to Medal of Valor level.”

“So, I’m snuggled up right now with a highly decorated, real-life, certified hero.” She gave him an impressed look. “I have to say, that is a huge turn on.”

“So I should have led with that when I first met you.”

Courtney laughed. “Yes. Definitely.”

“I’ll keep that in mind from now on.”

“You should. In fact, you should wear your medal everywhere you go. Any outfit. Just pin it on and go. The ladies will be all over you.”

“Good tip.” He nodded. “Okay, now your turn. The thing you’re most proud of. Go.”

“Hmm. That’s a tough one. I don’t have that many things that I’m all that proud about.”

“Quit kidding around and tell me. I want to get to the good stuff.
